Preserve your own love story for generations.

Chocolate, flowers, a heart-shaped card and a candlelit meal are all the standard trappings of a Valentine's Day celebration. But it's about time another item was added to the list. I'm talking about video.

Why video? Because the love story you share with your wife, partner or significant other is special and unique. It deserves to be told and preserved and shared. And video provides the perfect medium to do just that.

Here are some ideas:

Surprise your partner. Record your remembrances of your first meeting, your courtship and, if applicable, your wedding or civil union. Talk about what makes him or her special and how he/she has enriched your life. Don't be afraid to let your emotions show. Then, add some music and photos to your on-camera appearance, put the finished video on a DVD and wrap it in a beautiful gift box. Then, play the DVD as soon as the box is opened. A romantic present like this will knock your loved one's socks off - and his/her appreciation for the video will last long after the chocolates are gone.

Make it a team effort. Using one or two cameras, expand on the idea above by videotaping your reminiscences together. You and your sweetheart are sure to have a lot of fun during the taping - and you may even uncover a few surprises as you compare stories and memories.

Say it in pictures. If you're a person of few words, create a photo and music montage for your partner. You might start with photos of your lives before you met, and then progress to courtship, marriage, civil union, etc. The right photos, accompanied by the perfect melody, will touch your true love's heart and remain a valued keepsake for years to come.

Finally, don't forget your parents! If your parents or grandparents or favorite aunts and uncles are still alive, why not preserve their love stories? They'll thank you for it, and you'll be creating more inspiring videos to add your family history video collection.

Family Legacy Video's newest video offering - the Pet Legacy Video.

Celebrate the stories you and your pets share with a Pet Legacy Video. Most company presidents would be concerned if they found their businesses “going to the dogs.” But not Steve Pender. In fact, he's actively courting the furred and feathered set – or rather their owners. That’s because Family Legacy Video’s latest service, the Pet Legacy Video™, is designed to celebrate the lives of those cherished four-legged or winged family members.

“Family Legacy Video’s mission is helping individuals and families preserve their life stories on video,” says Pender. “And since pets play a vital role in so many of our stories, we thought we’d offer pet owners the chance to honor their pets with a video they can enjoy now and keep as a remembrance for years to come.”

The Pet Legacy Video™ features an on-camera interview with the pet owner and shots of the owner and pet enjoying each other’s company, as well as still photos and scenes from family videos (if available) that feature the pet. Music and titles complete the package. Prices start at $3,750 for a video up to 10 minutes in length, delivered on a custom-printed DVD. Each video is unique and is tailored to fit a pet owner’s wants and needs.

“Pets are family,” says Pender. “The joy they bring to us is immeasurable. I can’t think of a better way to express our love for our pets and preserve their memories than with a Pet Legacy Video™.”

For more information, visit the Pet Legacy Video page of the Family Legacy Video Web site.

Ask Steve - This month: Learn how to digitally repair and enhance photos at our April video bio workshop!

Note: Dan Crapsi is a talented videographer and an important part of Family Legacy Video's video biography workshops. He recently wrote to suggest adding Photoshop tips to the skills we'll teach at our April workshop.

Q: Dear Steve,
I just finished an interesting video project for a non-profit group here in Phoenix. In fact, it’s the oldest charitable organization in the Valley. The video was in celebration of their 100-year anniversary and was played during a luncheon at which they awarded a one million dollar grant.

Anyway, they asked me to put together a retrospective of the group. We covered 100 years in about 10 minutes. Along with recent interviews and video, we incorporated loads of historical photos – many from the state history archives – but also from private scrapbooks. Working on this video reminded me of the Family Legacy Video projects I’ve worked on with you, and brought to mind some of the challenges and opportunities family historians encounter in working with old photographs – challenges and opportunities that can be addressed using Photoshop.

When I saw some of the old black & white historical photos, I wanted to make them more interesting – and “realistic” – to look at. I first tried tinting, which was okay. But then I started playing with coloring them. While experimenting with various application techniques, I hit on a method that is easy and can be used with as much detail and realism as desired.

I think this would make an interesting and valuable segment for the next Family Legacy Video workshop.

In addition to tinting and colorizing b&w photos, I discovered some quick and easy ways to revitalize faded (both b&w and color) photographs. As you can imagine, the quality of photos we had to work with was all over the place. But Photoshop can really do magic – in some cases with only a couple of mouse clicks.

In the workshop I can demonstrate these procedures and perhaps even touch on alpha channels – as you are so well aware these can really be useful when editing photos into videos. Of course I’d have to spend a little time talking about the tools available (and how to adjust them) along with making custom color palettes. The great thing is I think even Photoshop beginners can get a lot of useful information while the students already familiar with the application can also learn some new tricks.

Below are some samples of before and after correction/restoration and colorizing comparisons.
