The November "Create Your Own Video Biography" workshop was fun and informative

that the 2006 workshop season is a wrap, we're looking forward to 2007. We'd
like to make the workshops bigger, better and even more beneficial for you. To
do that, we need your help. Please take a moment to fill out our online workshop
survey. It's an easy way to get your name on our waiting list - AND your answers

Take advantage of the holidays to capture family
memories on video.
An interview with my mom - it's been something I've been wanting to do for a
long time. And this year I finally did it. Mom came out from New Jersey to
celebrate two November milestone birthdays (I turned 50 and she reached 70) as
well as Thanksgiving, which was sandwiched in between. We had a great visit, and
on the day after we celebrated her birthday, we sat down for an interview that
celebrated her life (that's us in the picture at the top of the page.)
I'm so glad I took advantage of her holiday visit to preserve my mother's
stories on video. And this holiday season I urge you to do the same. A holiday
visit can afford you the time you need to interview family members you may not
see during the rest of the year. If you have a relative whose memories you'd
like to record, give them a call and arrange an interview while he or she is in
your neck of the woods.
Here's another idea: We all have lots of memories centered around the holidays.
Think about grabbing short interviews with as many family members as possible -
interviews that focus solely on their remembrances of past Christmas, Hanukkah,
Solstice, Kwanzaa and/or New Year's celebrations. Then use these interviews to
create a "family holiday memories" DVD that you and your family will treasure.
Whatever holiday you're celebrating this month, have a wonderful time - and
don't forget to capture some of your family storytellers on video!
Family Legacy Video is a finalist in the technology category of the 2007 SASIE
Awards. SASIE stands for "Southern Arizona Smart Inspiring Enterprise Awards"
and is sponsored by the Arizona Small Business Administration and Tucson
Business Edge, a Tucson business newspaper. The SASIE Awards honor outstanding
entrepreneurs in Southern Arizona whose innovative business approaches deserve
recognition.
Needless to say, it's a thrill to be a finalist. Winners will be announced on
March 6th, 2007 - and you'll learn the results in the April e-Newsletter.
Inspiring women to create legacies of stories.
On October 26th, Steve Pender was a guest presenter at the Positive Aging for
Women Conference, sponsored by the City of Tucson. Steve conducted two hour-long
workshops, entitled "Creating a Family Legacy: A History of Your Family on
Video." A letter to Family Legacy Video from Tucson's Vice Mayor, Carol West,
stated that Steve's workshops, "...brought rave reviews from the women who
attended. The information you shared awakened many of these women to think more
about the legacy they will want to leave their family. We hope that you will
join us again at a future conference."
The Family
Legacy Video Theatre is the online theatre where you can view all
the video clips streaming from the Family Legacy Video Web site. The clips you
see there will surely inspire you with ideas for your family video, plus you'll
get to see Steve Pender talk about his passion for family history video in two
television appearances.
You'll see a window containing a video screen with controls and a list of clips.
Decide which clip you'd like to view and click on the correct speed (High, Low)
to match your Internet connection. In the bottom right of the theatre window is
a list showing the appropriate speed for your kind of connection. NOTE:
Please be patient - you may need to wait a few seconds before a clip plays.
Enjoy the clip!
Select another clip or close the theatre window.
The Family Legacy Video
Theatre is always open, and YOU decide when the show begins.
Ask Steve - This month:
Sharing questions before an interview.
Q: Dear Steve,
Do you recommend showing your subjects the questions they'll be asked before you
do the interview?
- - Tamzin S., Tucson, Arizona
A: Hi, Tamzin.
I always give my subjects a list of proposed questions in advance of their
interviews. Having the questions beforehand gives your subject time to think
about his/her answers. As a result, he/she will be much better prepared when
interview time arrives. There may also be questions on your list your subject
may not want to answer or that are just not appropriate; it's best to weed these
out before the camera rolls. Plus, reading the list of questions may prompt your
subject to suggest questions that aren't on the list, giving you a chance to add
them and capture even more stories.
Cheers, Steve
