Helping YOU preserve your precious family stories on video.
Family Legacy Video's
video biography workshops
return in 2008. See story below.
Welcome
to the December issue!
2007 has been an eventful year for Family Legacy Video. We've
produced a number of multi-DVD video biographies and we've been featured in a
local Tucson newspaper. We're closing out the year by adding film-to-DVD and
film-to-tape transfers to our roster of services. Plus, I'm due to be
interviewed for a program on Tucson's NPR radio station (I'll let you know
before the show airs so you can listen!)
The phone calls and e-mails I've received throughout 2007,
from potential customers and from folks who'd like to get into the video
biography business, have shown me that interest in creating personal legacies on
video continues to grow. 2008 promises to be exciting!
This month we have news about the next Family Legacy Video
video biography workshops and our new film transfer service. We also answer a
question from a budding video biographer about pricing.
Have a Happy Hanukkah, a Merry Christmas, a Happy Kwaanza and
a safe, happy and prosperous New Year!

Family
Legacy Video travels to Tennessee for personal historians conference.
Family Legacy Video, in the person of company president Steve Pender, traveled
to Franklin, Tennessee this past November for the annual conference of the
Association of Personal Historians.
Steve shared his video biography expertise by conducting two workshops, one on
interview techniques - the other on video production workflow.
He previewed a
clip from a recent video biography (to rave reviews) during an evening "media
share" event and displayed Family Legacy Video's products and services during an
afternoon trade show. Steve also took away some valuable inspiration, which
he'll share in January's e-Newsletter.
Let
Family Legacy Video transfer your old family films to DVD or miniDV tape.
After nearly every presentation I give, someone in the audience asks me if
Family Legacy Video transfers old family films to DVD. I've always had to say
"no" - but not anymore. If you have 8mm, Super 8mm or 16mm family films that are
currently gathering dust, Family Legacy Video can give them new life on DVD or
miniDV tape. We can transfer your old VHS family videos to DVD, too. For more
details, visit the film transfer page of the Family Legacy Video Web site.
The show's on at the Family Legacy Video™ Theatre!
The Family Legacy Video™ Theatre is the online theatre where
you can view all the video clips streaming from the Family Legacy Video Web
site. The clips you see there will surely inspire you with ideas for your family
video, plus you'll get to see Steve Pender talk about his passion for family
history video in two television appearances.
You'll see a window containing a video screen with
controls and a list of clips.
Decide which clip you'd like to view and click on the
correct speed (High, Low) to match your Internet connection. In the bottom
right of the theatre window is a list showing the appropriate speed for your
kind of connection. NOTE: Please be patient - you may need to wait a
few seconds before a clip plays.
Enjoy the clip!
Select another clip or close the theatre window.
The Family Legacy Video™
Theatre is always open, and YOU decide when the show begins.
PS - If you have any difficulties playing the clips, please
let us know.
Ask Steve - This month:
A video bio pricing question.
Q: Dear Steve,
I always look forward to your newsletter. I'll be happy to hear about when you
schedule your next training class.
Starting a small business offering legacy videos seems very
exciting to me. I'm not sure how much people would be willing to pay to have a
video done here in Louisiana but I would think about $400 - $500. Is that
estimate too low? I'm trying to figure out how I can make enough money given the
time involved in producing a decent DVD.
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with all of us.
- - Jay H., Louisiana
A: Hi, Jay.
Thanks for your compliments about the newsletter. I’m glad you find it helpful.
Pricing is always a challenge. You need to consider the
market you’re aiming at and then how much time it takes you to produce a video
and how much you want to make. I’d suggest you create one or two videos for
family or friends. Track your hours along the way. When you’re finished, see how
much time you put into the project, multiply that by what your time is worth,
add in any out-of-pocket expenses like tape stock, DVD media, DVD cases, music,
etc. and see where you land price-wise.
Good luck to you.
Cheers, Steve
